Sewage changes the job. Most of what it soaks into can’t be dried and kept, so the cleanup happens behind plastic.

Where a backup usually starts

  • A toilet that overflows and keeps rising
  • Water coming up through a shower or tub drain when another fixture runs
  • A laundry or garage floor drain pushing water out
  • Roots in an old main line, which back up into the lowest drains first

The drain it came up through

  • Note which drain it came up through first. That drain goes on your map as the source.
  • Leave every sink, tub, toilet and washer off until the line is clear. Water run anywhere in the house can come back up where the backup did.
  • Shut the doors to the rooms it reached, so nobody carries it on their shoes through the rest of the house.

No wall gets opened until you’ve seen the map.

Your scope is drawn from the map, so every price on it points to a place in your house.

How sewage cleanup goes

  1. The line is cleared. The blockage is plumbing work, done by your plumber on their own bill. It comes first, so the next flush doesn’t bring it back.
  2. The area is sealed off. Plastic goes up around the rooms it reached.
  3. Soaked material comes out. Carpet and pad come out, and so does the drywall the sewage wicked into, with the insulation behind it.
  4. Hard surfaces are cleaned. Framing, concrete and tile are cleaned and disinfected.
  5. Drying. The framing is dried and read against a dry wall in the same house until the numbers match.
  6. Putting it back. Walls and floors go back on a scope of their own, once the area is clean and dry.

What decides the price

  • The area inside the rings on your map, and how high up the walls the sewage wicked
  • Packing up and storing furniture from the rooms inside the rings
  • What it soaked, which comes out: carpet and pad, wood flooring, drywall or insulation
  • Whether the outer ring reaches the crawl space, which means working through the access hatch
  • Days of drying before the framing reads like a dry wall in the same house

Clearing the line is your plumber’s bill. Your written scope prices the cleanup line by line before it starts.

Questions about sewage cleanup

Can we stay in the house?

Often, once the line is clear. The work stays behind the plastic, and you keep using the other rooms.

Can the carpet be saved?

Not after sewage. Carpet and pad it soaked come out.

Is it different from a clean-water leak?

Yes. Most of what clean water soaks can be dried where it is. What sewage soaks usually can’t, so more of it comes out, and the area is sealed off before anyone starts.

Will the smell go?

Usually, once the soaked material is out and the framing is clean and reads like a dry wall in the same house. If it lingers, the readings show whether something is still wet.
